Shakeel is a global leader in process safety with more than 40 years of industry experience and a deep commitment to preventing significant process safety incidents. As Chief Engineer of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and CEO of the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), he advances global collaboration, technical leadership, and industry engagement to strengthen process safety worldwide.

Shakeel joined CCPS as Executive Director in January 2015 and was named Executive Director and CEO in 2019. Under his leadership, CCPS has expanded its global reach, strengthened industry partnerships, and advanced its mission to minimize significant process safety incidents. He champions “Responsible Collaborations,” bringing together organizations with shared goals to broaden their collective impact. CCPS is an Industrial Technology Alliance of AIChE. In his expanded role as AIChE’s Chief Engineer, Shakeel also helps lead the Institute’s external technical outreach and represents AIChE in key global engagements.

Before joining CCPS, Shakeel spent 36 years at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., culminating in his role as Director of Global Process Safety and Risk Management. He was instrumental in building the company’s global process safety team, strengthening risk awareness and accountability, revitalizing process safety performance measurement, and deepening industry engagement. His contributions extend across the profession through service on process safety committees of the American Chemistry Council, American Petroleum Institute, Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, International Council of Chemical Associations, Compressed Gas Association, European Industrial Gases Association, and American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers.

In 2025, Shakeel received the Trevor Kletz Merit Award from the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center in recognition of his global contributions to process safety. He is a Fellow of both AIChE and CCPS. Shakeel holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering and an MBA in finance.
