Associate Member

To apply for Associate Membership you should have either:

• a chemical engineering degree accredited by IChemE as fully meeting the underpinning knowledge and understanding requirements for IEng, or
• partially meeting the underpinning knowledge and understanding requirements for CEng, or
• fully meeting the underpinning knowledge and understanding requirements for CEng
• a bachelor’s level chemical engineering degree recognised under ENGINEERS EUROPE or the Washington Accord or Sydney Accord.

Check if your degree is accredited by IChemE through the Engineering Council’s database.

Degrees recognised under Engineers Europe can be found through the European Engineering Education Database.

The Washington Accord is a multi-lateral agreement between bodies responsible for accreditation or recognition of tertiary-level/degree level engineering qualifications within their jurisdictions who have chosen to work collectively to assist the mobility of professional engineers.

The Accord outlines the mutual recognition, between the participating bodies, of accredited engineering degree programmes. The signatories can be found here.

If you believe that your academic qualification may be accredited and recognised via the Washington Accord we recommend that you check with the accreditation body concerned.

Associate Members get access to all membership resources plus:

Before starting your application, please check you are eligible in the 'Who can apply for Associate Membership' section.

To apply for Associate Membership you must first register on our online application portal.

Once you have an application system account you will be able to apply for the Associate Member grade. You will need to provide the following details when you apply online:

1. your personal information and contact details.
2. employment details.
3. qualification details. You will need to upload a certified copy of any qualification certificate(s).
4. payment details (credit/debit card and PayPal*).

Our annual membership fees for new members are prorated each quarter. If you start your membership mid-year, your first payment will be adjusted based on the remaining months. For example, if you sign up in June, you will only pay for the remaining six months of the year.

The membership fees below are for July to September 2026, which covers your membership up to December 2026.

• Country Group 1: GBP 121.00
• Country Group 2: GBP 101.50
• Australia: GBP 121.00 +10% GST
• New Zealand: GBP 121.00 +15% GST

Upgrade from Student Membership:

• Country Group 1: GBP 98.00
• Country Group 2: GBP 78.50
• Australia: GBP 98.00 +10% GST
• New Zealand: GBP 98.00 +15% GST

Our membership bands align with the World Bank's 'country classifications by income level'. Those in Country Group 1 pay the standard rate for the relevant membership grade, members in Country Group 2 pay approximately 80% of the standard rate.

If you are studying for a postgraduate degree, such as a PhD, EngD, MPhil, or a taught Master's, in a subject related to chemical engineering, you can get free IChemE membership.

You can apply for a reduced rate by submitting the reduced rate request form. Once we have received and processed your request, we will email you regarding your subscription. Please note that we may ask for evidence relating to your claim.

IChemE's subscription year runs from January to December with payment due on 1 January each year. View the current rates for existing members.

Photos of certificates should show all edges of the original document and any watermarks, holograms, or stamps should be clearly visible.

Your document must be certified by an eligible person. This could be a:

• senior member of your employing company
• professionally qualified member of an Engineering Council licensed Professional Engineering Institution eg IChemE, ICE, IMechE etc
• university lecturer
• solicitor
• professionally qualified member of a Washington Accord signatory.

The person you ask should not be related to you, living at the same address, or in a relationship with you.

To certify your certificate, you should show both the photocopied document and the original to the person certifying the document(s). They will need to:

• write ‘Certified to be a true copy of the original seen by me’ on the document
• sign and date it
• print their name under the signature
• add their employing organisation or university/college plus position, or Professional Engineering Institution plus membership grade and number
• add their email address and contact telephone number.

As part of your application, we may contact your verifier or the university/college awarding the certificate.
