Giovanni completed his chemical engineering degree at the University of Melbourne in 1980. He started in chemicals and polymers manufacturing at Monsanto, in different roles, initially in brownfields projects, then greenfield design, procurement and construction supervision. There were periods in production supervision, and excellent learning about safety in design and in construction.

Technical sales of at BASF, followed while at the same time he completed a graduate diploma in marketing from Monash University. Marketing management at Bunge followed, initially in bio-degradable plastics, then expanding to starches, gluten and glucose, some manufacturing supervision and logistics.

He subsequently worked at Technip in Italy, covering the Far East, in the fields of fertilisers, oil refining, gas processing, LNG and polymers. Returning to Australia in 1996, to work at Kvaerner John Brown, in Business Management covering Chemicals, Polymers and Power Generation.

A sales role at Bovis Lend Lease followed, covering industrial plants and power generation, then, in 2002, back to Technip, Perth, as VP Downstream for ANZ, mostly in gas, hydrogen, fertilisers, nickel and copper, responsible for both project delivery and business growth.

In 2007, Giovanni joined Worley, where he had a number of roles in Australia and Internationally. He now works as a specialist advisor where he provides strategic and technical advice, with a strong focus on decarbonisation and the energy transition. Industries include fertilisers, blue and green ammonia, hydrogen, NOx reduction, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction strategies, as well as acids, methanol, polymers, minerals, oil and gas.

Giovanni is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In terms of industry leader leadership, Giovanni was in the Process Engineers and Contractors Association (PECA) where he served as chair and deputy chair for some years, and was on the Board of the Australian Institute of Energy.
